Holy Days of Obligation

The following solemnities are holy days of obligation:

 
 +January 1              (Saturday) ……………Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God
 * June 2                    (Thursday)……………Ascension of the Lord
++August 15           (Monday) …………….Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary   
   November 1         (Tuesday)…………….All Saints
   December 8         (Thursday) …………...Immaculate Conception of the B.V.M.
   December 25       (Sunday) ……………..Nativity of the Lord – Christmas
 
+ Since the Solemnity of Mary, Mary of God, falls on a Saturday the precept to attend Mass is abrogated. The Holy See approved the Decree of the USCCB effective January 1, 1992.
 
*Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord will be observed on Sunday, June 5, 2011, (in place of the Seventh Sunday of Easter). This is in accord with the decree of the Bishops of the Province of San Francisco according to the procedure approved by the USCCB and confirmed by the Holy See.
 
++ Since the Solemnity of The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary falls on a Monday, the precept to attend Mass is abrogated. The decree of the USCCB was confirmed and approved by the Holy See, effective January 1, 1993.
